Port Vila turned 44 years this year.

The anniversary was celebrated yesterday under the theme, ‘Together for a greater Port Vila’.

In his official remark, Port Vila Mayor, Albert Daniel acknowledged that Port Vila is known throughout the region and even internationally for being the only ‘Green City in the Pacific’, after receiving an award for ‘Global Green City’ as part of the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards at the 2018 Annual Session of the Global Forum on Human Settlements at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.

Mayor Daniel acknowledged that Port Vila has upgraded a lot following assistance and support from the Government’s development partners.

He remarked, “When we talk about ‘Together for a Greater Port Vila’ we want to see that Port Vila citizens unite to build a good future.

“Mow the lawn in your yard to make the capital cleaner and nicer. Tell anyone littering around town to dispose rubbish at the right place. I

“If you think your buildings need painting, then paint it, and if you still have outstanding property tax, make an effort to start paying.”

This year, the celebration was special and different from previous years, as Port Vila athletes who recently participated in the National Games in Tanna were also invited to celebrate the event.

Both the Lifou Mayor and Luganville Mayor were guests at the 44th anniversary celebration yesterday.

A highlight of the event was the presence of the new recruits in the Vanuatu Mobile Force who made their first public appearance in the parade from Moorings area, through town to Feiawa Park.
